Lindita Nikolla’s First Speech as Speaker of New Parliament

Lindita Nikolli has been elected Friday as the new Parliament Speaker of Albania with 79 votes pro and only 4 against, which were the votes of the members of Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI), while the Democratic Party (DP) MPs torn the ballot sheets in sign of protest against her.

Following election in duty, Nikolla held her first speech as Speaker of Parliament, during which said she feels happy and proud, urging the new parliament to be constructive and to have debates rather than disruption.

"Thank you. Dear Albanian citizens, honorable chair of the session, honorable colleagues and fellow MPs. To be in front of you today, in front of the Albanian people, to be the first in the Albanian Parliament, is an honor that cannot be said in words.

Commitment to the Republic, the Constitution and the law have always been my duty. Today, responsibilities become even higher. Today, I make a strong, but sure commitment to lead our joint work with debate, but not upliftment, cooperation, not disruption.

I want to thank Mr. Ruçi for the model he created in his political career.

This Assembly is the result of the free election of April 25. Electoral figures and facts, and not even my political affiliation, will not be the star of the caravan in the duty I undertake. To me, the minority and the majority will be distinguished by the numbers.

Together, we should make the Assembly a public asset, not a problem for the public. Let us not seek answers left or right, but the right ones. We are not the enemy in this room. We are individuals with different and opposite views", emphasized Nikolla.
