Opposition Protest in Albania Escalates Into Clashes With Police
What began as a calm opposition protest near the Prime Minister’s Office in Tirana has now taken a dramatic turn, with tensions escalating into direct confrontations between demonstrators and police forces.
According to reports from the scene, clashes erupted after several protesters allegedly threw pyrotechnic devices and explosive materials toward police officers. In response, law enforcement authorities used tear gas and water cannons in an attempt to disperse the crowd and regain control of the situation.
Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha was also seen at the protest, wearing a gas mask amid the growing unrest and heavy use of tear gas.
Until shortly before the escalation, the demonstration had remained largely peaceful. Members of the Democratic Party, alongside Berisha, initially gathered in front of the Prime Minister’s Office before marching toward the Ministry of Interior, where they were met by a police cordon.
The situation remains tense as security forces continue efforts to contain the unrest.
