Opposition Seeks Changes in Committee for Electoral Reform
The opposition grouping of MP Bardhi and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha have sent a request to the Speaker of the Parliament, Lindita Nikolla, to proceed with changing the composition of the Special Parliamentary Committee for Electoral Reform.
In their request, the opposition MPs propose changing the composition of the Special Committee, emphasizing that if the 7 MPs of the Parliamentary Group of the official Democratic Party of MP Lulzim Basha are represented by a member chosen by them, then the parliamentary group expresses its readiness to withdraw a member from the proposal and appointment of one of the colleagues who is absent from the meeting as a member of the Committee.
In the letter addressed to Nikolla, the opposition points out that the 47 MPs of the opposition, together with the 7 MPs of the Parliamentary Group for Democracy and Integration who have appointed Shpëtim Idrizi as their member, constitute the absolute majority of the MPs of the opposition.
The signatory MPs state that they have analyzed the situation since September 2023 and from this analysis "it proved that the Electoral Reform was clearly being left in silence, it was being deliberately blocked, even though time was passing and the next elections were near"
The letter of the MPs closes with the call to the Speaker of the Parliament to respond to the call of international partners to find a way of dialogue between the parties and to take into consideration the agreement reached in the Resolution of the Stabilization-Association Committee EU-Albania, which emphasizes the need to ensure a truly representative and inclusive approach to the Electoral Reform Commission.
