Rama Responds to Flood Criticism, Points to Heavy Rains Across Europe

Prime Minister Edi Rama has responded to criticism following flooding in several Albanian cities, sharing images on social media of floods in countries including Italy, Greece, Croatia and Montenegro.

In a sarcastic post, Rama questioned why he, the government and the municipality of Durrës were not being blamed for the heavy rainfall affecting those countries as well, suggesting opposition parties elsewhere were not accusing their governments.

Albania has been hit by intense rainfall for the past two days, causing flooding in multiple areas, with the situation most critical in Durrës. Authorities said around 800 homes and dozens of businesses in the city’s outskirts have been flooded.

Civil Emergency services and the military have been deployed to affected areas, while school classes have been suspended in some locations due to the weather.

The opposition has accused Rama and his government of responsibility for the flooding, arguing that the damage was not caused solely by rainfall.
