Saranda Police Chief Gives Statement After Arrest in Illegal Construction Probe

New details have emerged regarding the testimony of Saranda Police Commissariat Chief Gëzim Bashllari, who was arrested following a police operation targeting illegal constructions along the coastline.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, Bashllari made surprising statements before investigators from the Police Oversight Agency (AMP). He reportedly claimed that throughout the week he had been fully occupied with investigating a murder case that recently occurred in Saranda, leaving him with no time to address issues related to illegal construction activities.

Bashllari, together with three police inspectors — Andi Duro, Ajdin Ismailaj, and Robert Çullaj — was arrested on suspicion of abuse of office by allegedly allowing the illegal construction of a beach station and beach bar on the coastal line.

Investigators believe that a criminal group based in Kamza may be behind the unauthorized construction project. While authorities have not yet confirmed whether police officials received bribes, preliminary findings suggest the officers may have been paid by the group in exchange for failing to intervene.

The Police Oversight Agency launched the operation following a referral reportedly initiated by Albania’s top police official, Skënder Hita, after a citizen complaint was submitted concerning the situation on the ground in Saranda.

Following the complaint and the initial findings, the entire leadership chain of the Saranda Police Commissariat was dismissed and placed under arrest as investigations continue.
