September Inflation at 1.9%, Lowest since June 2021

The consumer price index in September increased by an annual 1.9%, recording the lowest level since June 2021 according to official data from the country’s statistical office INSTAT.

A year ago in the same month, this change was 4.1%. The monthly change of the consumer price index in September 2024 compared to August 2024 was 0.6%.

More detailed data show that the annual increase in prices in September was mainly influenced by the group "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" with 0.94 percentage points, followed by the group "Rent, water, fuel and energy" with 0.30 pps.

Also, the prices of the group "Furniture, home appliances and home maintenance" increased by 0.26 pps, followed by the prices of the group "Alcoholic beverages and tobacco" by 0.17 pps, the prices of the group "Clothing and shoes" by 0.13 pps, the prices of the "Entertainment and culture" and "Miscellaneous goods and services" groups with 0.10 pps each, the prices of the "Hotels, cafes and restaurants" group with 0.09 pps, the prices of the "Health" group by 0.04 pps, the prices of the "Educational Service" group by 0.03 pps, the prices of the "Communication" group by 0.02 pps, while on the other hand the prices of the "Transportation" group marked a decrease by 0.28 pps.

Compared to the same month a year ago, the largest increase in prices was recorded by the group "Entertainment and Culture" with 4.6%, followed by the groups "Clothing and Shoes" and "Furniture, home appliances and home maintenance" with 3.6% each, "Alcoholic beverages and tobacco" with 3.5%, "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" with 2.7%, "Miscellaneous goods and services" with 1.9%, "Hotels, cafes and restaurants" with 1.8 %, "Rent, water, fuel and energy" with 1.5%, "Health" with 1.1%, "Educational service" with 0.9% and "Communication" with 0.8%.

On the other hand, the prices of the "Transport" group decreased by 4.5%. Within the food group, the prices of the subgroup "vegetables including potatoes" increased by 6.5%, followed by the subgroups "fish" by 4.6%, "milk, cheese and eggs" by 3.9%, "meat" by 3.4%, "sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and sweets" with 3.0%, etc.

Compared to August 2024, the prices of the "Entertainment and culture" group increased by 1.9%, followed by "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" by 1.4%, "Clothing and shoes" and "Furniture, home appliances and maintenance of home" with 0.5% each. On the other hand, the prices of the "Transport" group decreased by 0.1%.
