Violence Erupts at Albania Opposition Protest; Dozens Arrested, Police Injured

Albania’s Democratic Party held its third nationwide protest on Tuesday in front of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tirana, a demonstration that escalated into violent clashes leaving multiple police officers injured and resulting in dozens of arrests, authorities said.

Protesters initially gathered along the “Dëshmorët e Kombit” boulevard before the Prime Minister’s Office and later moved toward the Parliament building. During the protest, individuals allegedly threw Molotov cocktails, fireworks and hard objects at government institutions and police officers securing the area.

According to police, 16 officers were injured during the clashes and received medical treatment in hospital. Authorities said their injuries were not life-threatening.

In a statement, Tirana Police said 21 individuals were arrested in flagrante delicto following investigative actions conducted in cooperation with the Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction in Tirana.

Those arrested face charges including “Assault due to duty,” “Intentional serious injury,” “Disturbing public order and peace,” “Violation of rules on explosive and flammable substances,” “Destruction of property by fire,” and “Opposition to a public order police officer.”

Police also initiated proceedings against one 32-year-old man who will be investigated while free, on charges of disturbing public order and opposing a police officer.

Additionally, prosecutors have opened investigations against several members and officials of the Democratic Party. Among them is the party’s organizational secretary, who is being investigated for “Organizing and participating in illegal gatherings and demonstrations” and “Incitement of minors to commit crime.” Four other party members are under investigation for allegedly opposing police officers and inciting minors.

Authorities announced that one 41-year-old suspect has been declared wanted, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend him.

Evidence Seized

Police said they seized 22 unexploded Molotov cocktails and three bottles containing suspected gasoline near the Parliament building. Investigators are continuing to work to identify and arrest other individuals allegedly involved in violent acts during the protest.

Procedural materials have been forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office for further action.

The Democratic Party has not yet publicly responded to the latest police statement.
