Wind Energy’s Potential Can Reduce Imports
On the occasion of World Wind Energy Day, the National Agency for Scientific Research and Innovation (AKKSHI) brought to attention the results of a research project that highlights Albania’s high potential for developing wind energy and its contribution to reducing electricity imports and environmental pollution.
The project “Study of the potential of wind energy in areas of interest in Albania and its contribution to reducing electricity imports and environmental pollution”, funded by the Ministry of Education within the framework of the National Research and Development Program, analyzed 11 areas with wind potential in five geographical regions of the country.
According to AKKSHI, the study provided the first systematic and technical-economic assessment of wind energy resources in Albania, creating an important database for planning investments in this sector.
Among the areas studied, the Shashica area in Kanina, Vlora, was selected for the most detailed pilot study. The analysis was based on three years of field measurements conducted through an anemometer tower, as well as a multi-scenario assessment that included 64 parametric combinations. “The study demonstrates through quantitative results that onshore wind energy projects in Albania are technically feasible and economically viable,” AKKSHI emphasizes.
Experts estimate that the use of wind energy can play a crucial role in strengthening the country’s energy security and fulfilling its commitments to environmental protection and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The project results highlight the country’s potential to diversify energy production sources, reduce import dependence, and support the objectives of the green transition and sustainable development.
