Albania Commemorates Students' Movement that Overthrew Communism
About 300 students started on the night of December 8, 1990 what was later called the Student Movement of the 90s.
Those organized marched from the Student City to the center of Tirana.
Their march stopped between the Student City and the boulevard of Tirana. Their queues increased minute by minute and the crowd had reached up to 1000 people.
Despite the appearance of the police force, the students did not stop, causing the Student Movement to grow in the following days.
The next day, on December 9, the students confirmed their demands to the president of that time, Ramiz Ali, where they generally demanded political pluralism, freedom of speech and the acceleration of democratic reforms.
Protests continued until the evening of December 11, when in the meeting with Ramiz Ali, political pluralism was confirmed, which was announced immediately after returning from that meeting, starting the organizations for the establishment of the Democratic Party.
The Student Movement would continue with organizations and protests in the first days of 1991 until the days of the hunger strike, culminating at noon on February 20, 1991, when the students, supported by teachers and many citizens of Tirana, landed in "Skanderbeg" square, ultimately overthrowing the communist system.
