HPC Opens Competition for Next Prosecutor General as 2026 Term End Approaches

The High Prosecutorial Council has officially opened the competition for the position of Prosecutor General, launching a 30-day application period for candidates interested in leading the country’s top prosecution office.

The process, which was announced two days earlier and formally initiated on Thursday, is a key step in the constitutional procedure for selecting Albania’s next chief prosecutor.

Under the Constitution of Albania, the Prosecutor General is elected by a three-fifths majority of the members of the Parliament of Albania from a shortlist of three candidates proposed by the High Prosecutorial Council. The mandate lasts seven years and is non-renewable.

The current Prosecutor General, Olsian Çela, is expected to complete his term in December 2026. Çela was elected by parliament in December 2019 and previously served in the Special Prosecution Office for Serious Crimes.

The opening of the application process marks the beginning of a lengthy institutional procedure that will culminate in the selection of one of the most important judicial figures in Albania.
