Albania’s Former Parliament Speaker Servet Pëllumbi Dies at 89

Servet Pëllumbi, former Speaker of the Parliament of Albania and a prominent figure in the country’s post-1990 political transition, has died at the age of 89.

Born on December 14, 1936, in Korçë, Pëllumbi was widely regarded as an influential voice in Albania’s evolving political landscape following the fall of communism. He served as Speaker of the Parliament of Albania from 2002 to 2005, a period marked by significant parliamentary activity and institutional development.

Beyond his political career, Pëllumbi was also a respected academic and professor of sociology, contributing extensively to social studies and higher education in Albania. He played a key role in shaping academic thought and mentoring generations of students.

Pëllumbi was an early and significant member of the Socialist Party of Albania, holding various leadership roles throughout his career and influencing the party’s direction during critical years of political transformation.

In recognition of his public and institutional contributions, he received several state honors, including the Order of “Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu,” awarded by former President Alfred Moisiu.

His death marks the passing of a key figure in Albania’s modern political and academic history.
