Lawyer Kujtim Cakrani Ends Legal Representation of Former Albanian President Ilir Meta

Albanian attorney Kujtim Cakrani will no longer represent former President Ilir Meta in ongoing criminal proceedings before Albania's Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO), according to a statement issued by Cakrani Law Firm on Sunday.

The law firm said the attorney-client relationship has been terminated due to a loss of mutual trust and a lack of the cooperation necessary to continue providing effective legal representation.

According to the statement, Cakrani began representing Meta on May 24, 2025, undertaking his defense in criminal proceedings initiated by Albania's Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK). The firm said the legal team carried out its responsibilities with professional integrity and full commitment to protecting the client's legal rights and interests.

The firm announced that, as of June 29, 2026, the professional relationship has formally come to an end. It said the breakdown in cooperation became particularly evident following the most recent court hearing in the main trial.

Cakrani Law Firm stressed that the decision complies fully with Albania's legal ethics rules and the Code of Ethics governing the legal profession. The statement emphasized that the separation is not the result of any conflict of interest, mutual accusations, or public dispute, but solely reflects the absence of the objective conditions required for an effective legal defense.

The firm also wished Meta success in securing new legal representation and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of all information obtained during the course of its legal mandate, as required by law.
