PM Rama Urges Socialist MPs to Step Up Social Media Activity, Warns of ‘Cyber Warfare’ Ahead of Protest

Prime Minister Edi Rama has instructed lawmakers from the ruling Socialist Party to significantly increase their activity on social media, warning that the government is facing what he described as a "cyber war" fueled by fake accounts and automated bots ahead of a planned nationwide protest.

The remarks were made during a closed-door meeting of the Socialist Party's parliamentary group held Monday at the Albanian Parliament, where discussions reportedly focused on the anti-government protest movement that has now entered its 30th consecutive day.

According to Albanian media outlet VNA, Rama told lawmakers that the government's political challenge is no longer confined to the streets but has expanded into the digital sphere.

"This is a cyber war being waged against us by different actors. There are many fake profiles and robotic accounts that have entered the game," Rama was quoted as saying during the meeting.

Rama reportedly argued that anti-government messaging is being amplified by coordinated "troll farms" and automated bot networks designed to create what he described as an artificial perception of widespread public unrest.

He urged Socialist Party MPs to remain active on Facebook, Instagram and X, encouraging them to regularly share official government messages and increase their online presence to demonstrate that public support for the government remains strong despite what he characterized as a virtual "storm."

The meeting comes just days before another nationwide protest scheduled for Saturday, which organizers expect to draw large crowds. The date also coincides with Rama's 62nd birthday.
