Albania’s top state officials and senior security leaders are expected to meet Monday morning at the Palace of Brigades for a session of the National Security Council, amid heightened attention over an investigation involving a former intelligence chief.

The meeting, convened by President Bajram Begaj, is scheduled to begin at around 8:30 a.m. Prime Minister Edi Rama is also expected to attend.

The session is expected to assess the national security situation following the arrest of former State Intelligence Service chief Vlora Hyseni.

Hyseni is suspected of having compromised sensitive information by allegedly passing classified material to the head of a criminal group, identified in the case as Ergys Agasi. The allegations remain subject to the ongoing legal proceedings.

Albania’s law defines the composition of the National Security Council, which includes the heads of 13 institutions and is chaired by the president.

Under the law, the president may also invite other officials or individuals whose expertise or responsibilities are relevant to the issues being discussed. Previous presidents have also invited opposition representatives to National Security Council meetings.

Rama is expected to attend Monday’s meeting after returning from the United States, where he has been taking part in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting comes as Albanian authorities face questions over the potential security implications of the case and the protection of classified information within the country’s intelligence and security institutions.
