Albanian Opposition Leader Sali Berisha Injured by Tear Gas During Protest
Tensions escalated Sunday at a Democratic Party of Albania protest in Tirana, as clashes between demonstrators and police intensified and tear gas was deployed to disperse the crowd.
Opposition leader Sali Berisha, who was at the forefront of the march alongside supporters and party lawmakers, suffered health issues after exposure to the gas. Eyewitnesses reported that Berisha showed signs of distress and required immediate assistance. His vehicle was quickly brought to the scene to evacuate him safely, while security personnel and aides escorted him out of the high-tension area.
Despite Berisha being removed from the immediate zone, confrontations between protesters and law enforcement continued. Police continued to use tear gas in an effort to regain control of the situation and disperse the demonstrators. Authorities have warned that the protest remains volatile and urged participants to follow safety measures.
This incident marks a new level of intensity in a series of ongoing demonstrations by the opposition aimed at challenging the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
