Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama was received on Wednesday by Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, where the two discussed regional developments in the Western Balkans and Albania’s path toward European Union integration.

According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, the meeting highlighted the strong relations between the Holy See and the Republic of Albania, with particular focus on cooperation between religious and civil communities.

The Vatican said the talks were held in a cordial atmosphere and addressed issues of mutual interest, including the current situation in the Western Balkans and Albania’s progress toward full EU membership.

Rama attended the meeting accompanied by his wife, Linda Rama, and their son, Zaho, who were also present during the audience, according to images released from the visit.

Earlier in the day, Rama, along with his family, paid homage at the tomb of Pope Francis.
