Albanian Prison Authorities Conduct Surprise Security Raids in Lushnjë and Elbasan Prisons

Albania’s General Directorate of Prisons has released details of a surprise security operation carried out at the prisons of Lushnjë and Elbasan, aimed at strengthening safety measures and preventing the circulation of prohibited items inside correctional facilities.

According to officials, inspections were conducted early Sunday morning under the orders and supervision of the Director General of Prisons, Adriatik Kupi, and the Director of Prison Police, Senior Chief Paulin Rajta.

The operation involved extensive searches in prison cells, internal regimes, common areas, and security sectors, with a special focus on identifying illegal items, reinforcing operational control, and increasing security standards within penitentiary institutions.

Authorities stated that the operation in Elbasan Prison was also carried out in cooperation with the institution’s newly appointed director, as part of efforts to strengthen security measures following the leadership transition.

During inspections at Lushnjë Prison, officers reportedly discovered and confiscated unauthorized items and communication device accessories, including a PlayStation 4 console, USB devices, and other electronic equipment.

Large security forces and prison administration personnel were deployed during the operation. Officials added that any materials found to constitute criminal offenses will be referred to the Service for Internal Affairs and Complaints (SHKBB) and other competent authorities for further procedural actions.

The General Directorate of Prisons said the raids are part of ongoing efforts to tighten security controls and maintain order inside Albania’s correctional institutions.
