Albanian Socialist Leader Urges Tougher Laws, Stronger Policing After Durrës Tragedy
Taulant Balla, head of the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group, called for immediate legal and institutional action following the fatal incident in Durrës that claimed the lives of two children.
Addressing Parliament, Balla stressed that the tragedy requires unified political reflection beyond party lines, arguing that current law enforcement measures — such as license point deductions — are insufficient to prevent serious road crimes. He urged swift revisions to the Criminal Code to impose harsher penalties in such cases.
Balla also called on the Albanian State Police to intensify monitoring of so-called “strongmen” in local communities, suggesting they should be closely supervised and restricted from accessing vehicles.
Defending Albania’s justice reform, Balla described it as a major institutional success, highlighting that individuals from all political sides are now being held accountable. He also warned against political pressure on prosecutors and judges, emphasizing the independence of the judiciary.
The Socialist leader further underlined the importance of government accountability to Parliament, calling for regular ministerial reporting — particularly on the country’s EU integration process. He reiterated that Albania is making significant progress toward membership, citing international assessments that rank the country among the frontrunners.
Balla concluded by urging political unity on European integration, framing it as a national objective that should rise above partisan divisions.
