Berisha Calls for Escalation of Opposition Action After National Protest
One day after the opposition held its first nationwide protest since the 11 May general elections, the leader of Albania’s Democratic Party (PD), Sali Berisha, called for an escalation of political action against the government.
Speaking at a press conference alongside four Democratic Party MPs, Berisha presented what he described as a book of evidence documenting alleged manipulation of the elections. He urged supporters to remain prepared for what he called a continued political battle.
Berisha thanked citizens who participated in the protest, including young people, families and pensioners, and said the opposition’s objective was the removal of the current government, the establishment of a technical administration and the organisation of free elections.
“Our mission is the departure of this government, a technical government and free elections,” Berisha said, adding that he believes the opposition’s return to power is inevitable.
Referring to the publication on the 11 May elections, Berisha described it as an unprecedented document, claiming it contains more than 1,500 pages and over 2,000 pieces of evidence, including documents, videos and photographs.
He said the material was compiled by Democratic Party structures tasked with safeguarding the vote, alleging that it details legal violations, interference by criminal groups and systematic breaches of electoral standards.
