Calls for National Assembly Emerge as Anti-Government Protests Continue Across Albania
Organizers of Wednesday’s nationwide protest renewed calls for political change as demonstrations continued for another day in Albania, drawing participants from across the country and members of the Albanian diaspora.
The protest, which coincided with the anniversary of the founding of the League of Prizren, was framed by organizers as a symbol of national unity and collective action. Participants gathered in central Tirana before marching toward government offices, while parallel demonstrations were reported in several other cities.
During speeches delivered outside the Prime Minister’s Office, one protest speaker called for the creation of a National Assembly that would bring together representatives from different social groups, regions, and civic movements.
Addressing the crowd, the speaker argued that the protest movement should evolve into a broader national platform capable of developing a long-term political vision. He urged protest organizers to publicly identify themselves and work toward establishing an inclusive assembly involving citizens from across the country.
According to the speaker, such a structure would help transform the ongoing demonstrations into a coordinated movement for institutional and political reform. He warned that failure to achieve meaningful change could lead to further democratic backsliding and called for the development of what he described as a new political system.
The proposal was presented as a way to unite civic groups and activists around a common agenda while excluding what the speaker characterized as representatives of the traditional political establishment.
The protests, which began over opposition to a controversial tourism development project, have gradually expanded into a wider movement focused on governance, accountability, and political reform. Organizers have indicated that demonstrations will continue in the coming days, while authorities have yet to formally respond to the latest calls made during the rallies.
