Court Rules on Detention of Protesters in Tirana

A court in Tirana on Monday ruled on security measures for 11 protesters arrested during a Democratic Party (PD) protest held last Friday.

The court ordered five of the individuals to remain in custody, while six others were released under a “mandatory appearance” measure, requiring them to report regularly to authorities.

Those remanded in custody were identified as Klement Çuçka, Bujar Tusha, Henri Shapllo, Mirvel Tocilla, and Semi Bici. Meanwhile, Bardhyl Ndou, Sokol Bajraktari, Igball Domi, Gentjan Tuga, Ernest Kapo, and Edison Shyti were placed under the less restrictive measure.

During the hearing, defense lawyers requested the recusal of Judge Enkel Peza, arguing that he and members of his family have held positions within local structures of the ruling Socialist Party (PS).

In support of the detained protesters, a group of Democratic Party lawmakers attended the session, including Secretary General Flamur Noka and Kavaja Mayor Fisnik Qosja.

Separately, the Democratic Party announced it has filed a complaint with the Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) against Interior Minister Besfort Lamallari, Police Chief Skënder Hita, and other senior police officials. The party alleges the use of excessive force during the protest, including the deployment of bear spray against demonstrators.
