Economy Grew by 4%, Public Debt Down; Malaj
Albania submitted the Economic Reform Program 2025-2027 on time and adopted the Medium-Term Revenue Strategy, aiming to increase fiscal efficiency without increasing the tax burden on citizens and businesses
Thursday's session in the Parliament focused on two important international reports for Albania, the one of the US Department of State on the investment climate 2025 and the progress report of the European Commission.
The Minister of Finance, Petrit Malaj, in his speech, praised the country's progress in macroeconomic stability, fiscal reform, and advancement towards European integration.
Malaj focused on the DASH report, which, according to him, highlights an economic growth of 4% during 2024, controlled inflation at 2.2%, and a reduction in public debt from 75% of GDP in 2021 to around 55% in 2024.
“The report also highlights the record increase in Foreign Direct Investments to $1.7 billion in 2024 and the total stock of foreign investments of $16.7 billion, reflecting the confidence of international investors in the Albanian economy,” said the minister.
Minister Malaj also highlighted the country’s progress in the fight against informality and money laundering, citing the FATF and MONEYVAL assessments, according to which Albania has addressed strategic deficiencies and has achieved over 95% compliance with international recommendations.
“The progress that Albania has achieved in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing is visible and appreciated by international organizations. FATF confirms that our country has successfully addressed all strategic deficiencies, and since 2023, it is no longer on the “grey list”. Also, MONEYVAL assesses that Albania has achieved over 95% compliance with international standards, strengthening the legal and institutional framework and increasing transparency on beneficial ownership,” declared Malaj.
The Minister further noted that the European Commission’s 2025 Progress Report highlights Albania’s advances in Chapters 4 and 24, including increasing financial investigations, seizing assets from organized crime, and improving fiscal results.
He stressed that Albania submitted the Economic Reform Program 2025-2027 on time and adopted the Medium-Term Revenue Strategy, aiming to increase fiscal efficiency without increasing the tax burden on citizens and businesses.
Minister Malaj underlined that the reform of the tax and customs administration has brought about a profound transformation, with over 95% of services being provided online, reducing the time for reviewing applications and saving millions of working hours for citizens and businesses.
“Albania today is stronger economically, more financially stable, and closer to the European Union than ever before,” said Malaj, adding that European integration remains a national strategic objective that belongs to every citizen and every political force.
