EU Ambassador Urges Albania to Stay Focused on Reforms and European Values

Silvio Gonzato delivered a message marking Europe Day, stressing the importance of defending the European Union’s core values, preserving peace and continuing Albania’s European integration process.

Speaking on Friday, Gonzato said the current international climate remains fragile, pointing to growing tensions not only across Europe but also in the Middle East and other regions.

“Now is the time to stand firm on the values we represent, for stability, good neighborly relations and partnerships,” Gonzato stated.

The EU ambassador said the bloc is responding to global instability by strengthening its capabilities and reinforcing its collective response mechanisms.

“The European Union is responding by becoming more capable and by strengthening its response. We are doing everything we can for stability. Peace is not free — it must be defended every day,” he said.

Gonzato also called on Albania’s political leadership to continue reforms linked to the country’s bid for EU membership, emphasizing the importance of fighting corruption and strengthening the rule of law.

“By supporting Albania and other candidate countries, Europe is investing in this path,” he said. “The integration process begins and ends with guaranteeing fundamental rights, combating corruption and strengthening the rule of law, which is important for the country and the region.”

The ambassador underlined that there are “no shortcuts to membership” and no way to bypass the criteria required for accession, urging Albania to remain focused on meeting European Union standards.
