European Parliament lawmaker Isabel Wiseler-Lima has raised concerns over the non-lifting of Belinda Balluku’s immunity during the 22nd meeting of the EU-Albania Parliamentary Stabilisation and Association Committee in Tirana.

Wiseler-Lima praised Albania’s Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPAK), noting that it enjoys a high level of public trust, but questioned how the independence of justice institutions is being safeguarded.

She also stressed the importance of ensuring that Albania’s justice reform remains irreversible, while pointing to the role of Parliament in decisions concerning immunity and the appointment of members of the prosecution and judicial councils.

The European lawmaker also called for further electoral reforms, greater transparency in major investments and progress on legislation concerning strategic investments and protected areas.

She said Albania needs a stronger record of concrete results, including convictions and asset confiscations, as it works toward closing EU accession chapters 23 and 24, covering the judiciary and fundamental rights.

“Investigations are always the beginning, but they are not the end,” Wiseler-Lima said, urging Parliament to listen more closely to citizens’ concerns.
