European Parliament Approves Albania Progress Report with Majority Vote

The European Parliament has adopted the latest progress report on Albania, voting in favor with 483 votes, alongside 103 votes against and 70 abstentions.

The report assesses Albania’s progress on its path toward European Union membership, reaffirming the country’s stated goal of joining the bloc by 2030 and concluding accession negotiations by 2027.

According to rapporteur Andreas Schieder, Albania continues to show strong public and political support for EU integration.

“More than 90 percent of Albanian citizens want EU membership,” Schieder said, adding that the country has already followed the necessary steps as a candidate state.

He also highlighted Albania’s rapid advancement in the accession process, noting that all negotiating clusters were opened within a 13-month period, which he described as evidence of strong political commitment to reforms.

Speaking during a plenary session earlier this week, Schieder emphasized that enlargement requires long-term reforms focused on strengthening the rule of law, improving social justice, and enhancing citizens’ quality of life.

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos also expressed confidence that Albania, alongside Montenegro, could become one of the next member states of the European Union.

The vote marks a significant milestone in Albania’s EU accession process, which remains closely watched across the Western Balkans.
