Former Defense Minister Olta Xhaçka Under Investigation for Suspected Corruption, Money Laundering
Former Defense Minister Olta Xhaçka has officially been placed under investigation by the Special Prosecution Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) over suspicions of corruption and money laundering, according to local media reports.
Xhaçka was formally notified of her status as a person under investigation in the presence of her lawyer.
She appeared at SPAK headquarters two days ago, just minutes after her husband, former Socialist Party lawmaker Artan Gaçi, left the premises. Gaçi is also reportedly under investigation over the same allegations.
The investigation is being conducted by special prosecutors Ols Dado and Altin Dumani and reportedly involves information obtained from abroad through international legal assistance requests.
Investigators are examining suspected corrupt dealings and transactions allegedly carried out through companies linked to Gaçi, according to the reports.
Gaçi previously obtained strategic investor status for a tourism development project. Authorities are also examining the ownership circumstances surrounding the land on which the resort is being built, amid allegations that the property may have been obtained through document forgery.
The investigation remains ongoing. The allegations have not been established in court, and the suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty under the law.
