Former President Appears in Court for First Trial Hearing, Calls Case ‘Shameful’
Albania’s former president Ilir Meta appeared in court on Monday for the first hearing of his trial on the merits, marking a key moment in a high-profile legal case that has drawn significant political attention.
The session is being held at the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime, where Meta, who also leads the Freedom Party, was seen inside the glass security enclosure. Upon entering the courtroom, he greeted supporters with a two-finger gesture before forming the Albanian eagle symbol with his hands, declaring: “Albania belongs to Albanians.”
Speaking ahead of the proceedings, Meta described the trial as “a shameful process against the Albanian state,” while calling for full transparency. “From today until the very end, I invite you to follow and broadcast the entire process live. I guarantee I will take responsibility for every action, act, and behavior of mine,” he said.
Lawmakers from both the Democratic Party of Albania and the Freedom Party were present at the court to follow the hearing, underscoring the political weight surrounding the case.
Meanwhile, Meta’s defense lawyer briefly addressed the media before entering the courtroom, striking a combative tone. “The first hearing is like first love—you never forget it. Now the battle begins,” he said.
The trial is expected to continue in the coming weeks as prosecutors and defense teams present their arguments in what is likely to be a closely watched legal and political showdown.
