Interior Minister Introduces Police Oversight Agency

The Committee on Legal Affairs was presented with a draft law on the transformation of the Service for Internal Affairs and Complaints at the Ministry of Interior into a new institution, the Police Oversight Agency.

The Minister of Interior Bledi Çuçi presented the draft before the MPs at the committee on Thursday, explaining that with the creation of the new agency, the Police, the Guard of the Republic and the firefighting service can now be overseen by this structure. Speaking about the innovations that this draft law has compared to the existing legislation, Çuçi said that “the scope of responsibility has expanded”.

“This draft law aims to reform the service or agency as it will be called after the adoption of this draft law as an intelligent agency to fight corruption and prevent illegal activity in the ranks of the police. The purpose is to increase public confidence, not to punish entities. Supervision is more than just observation and reporting,” said the minister.

For the opposition MPs, this initiative is delicate and requested that the Director of the State Police be present in the meeting as his subordinates are a direct subject of the initiative.
