Italian Nationals Among Seven Under Investigation After Albania Opposition Protest

Two Italian citizens are among seven people placed under criminal investigation following Albania’s national opposition protest held in Tirana on May 8, authorities said.

The demonstration, organized by the opposition in the Albanian capital, was marked by clashes between protesters and police, as well as the throwing of Molotov cocktails and fireworks during the unrest.

According to investigators, the two Italian nationals were questioned by authorities regarding their alleged involvement in the protest. However, they reportedly refused to provide explanations or details about their participation.

Sources said the Italian citizens were initially escorted to Police Station No. 2 in Tirana for questioning and are currently being investigated while remaining free pending further legal procedures.

The protest escalated at several moments as tensions rose between demonstrators and security forces, prompting police intervention. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the charges or identities of the individuals under investigation.
