Police Warns of SMS Scam Targeting Citizens With Fake Fine Notifications

State Police have issued a public warning following numerous reports from citizens who received fraudulent text messages claiming they had unpaid fines or administrative obligations.

According to police, the messages are part of a “smishing” scheme, a form of cyber fraud in which victims receive SMS notifications directing them to fake websites designed to resemble official government platforms. The messages typically urge recipients to pay alleged traffic fines, financial penalties or pending administrative fees.

Cybercrime investigators have launched an inquiry to identify those responsible. Preliminary findings suggest the goal of the scheme is to obtain personal and banking information that can later be used for unauthorized transactions and theft of funds.

Police stressed that receiving such a message does not, by itself, endanger a person’s bank account. The risk arises when recipients click on fraudulent links and enter banking details, online banking credentials or security codes. Authorities urged citizens to verify any payment requests through official channels and to contact their bank immediately if they have shared financial information on a suspicious website.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue efforts to combat cybercrime and protect citizens online.
