MABCO Files Complaint Against Judge, Launches International Arbitration Over Vlora Airport Dispute
MABCO Constructions SA says it has filed a complaint to the Special Prosecution against Corruption (SPAK) against judge Miranda Naka, alleging she blocked the implementation of a Supreme Court decision that restored the voting rights of the majority shareholder in VIA, the concessionaire of Vlora International Airport.
According to the company, the judge issued a ruling without the participation of the parties involved and just one day before a shareholders’ meeting scheduled to replace the airport company’s administrator. MABCO, which says it holds a 98% stake in VIA, argues that the decision contradicts a recent Supreme Court ruling in its favor.
MABCO also announced that it has initiated international arbitration proceedings against the Albanian state, claiming that authorities have failed to ensure the enforcement of court decisions and the reopening of access to the airport construction site, which the company says has been blocked for more than a month.
The company stated that it has informed the President of Albania, political party leaders, parliamentary groups and members of the diplomatic corps about the dispute. MABCO further warned that it will challenge any contractual actions involving VIA that are undertaken without its approval as the majority shareholder.
