Lin Village Declared 'Urban Architectural Ensemble', Added to UNESCO Heritage

The picturesque Albanian village of Lin, situated on the shores of Lake Ohrid near Pogradec, has been officially declared an “Urban Architectural Ensemble” and incorporated into the Albanian component of the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The decision was publicly announced by Prime Minister Edi Rama, who posted on social media: “From the beautiful village of Lin, which has just been declared an ‘Urban Architectural Ensemble’, being included in the Albanian UNESCO World Heritage Site.”

Lin retains its traditional settlement pattern: narrow cobblestone or stone-paved lanes, houses built on the lakeshore slope, blending with the natural landscape of Lake Ohrid. The village sits on an outcrop that hosts remains of one of Europe’s earliest pile-dwelling settlements, and a 6th-century early Christian basilica whose mosaics are preserved.

With this recognition, Lin’s architectural, cultural and natural values receive added protection under international heritage frameworks.

The status of “Urban Architectural Ensemble” means that Lin’s traditional built environment — its vernacular houses, alleys, waterfront, and historic monuments — will be preserved and conserved more rigorously.

Local authorities plan infrastructure upgrades and heritage safeguards: for example, improving the waterfront promenade, restoring facades and public spaces, and protecting archaeological-heritage sites.

The designation is expected to boost sustainable tourism: visitors drawn by architectural heritage, natural beauty, and cultural depth of Lin, potentially creating new opportunities for local residents while emphasising preservation of authenticity.
