Parliament Rejects Request to Lift MP Belinda Balluku’s Immunity
Albania’s Parliament has rejected a request from the Special Prosecution against Corruption (SPAK) to lift the parliamentary immunity of lawmaker Belinda Balluku, blocking a move that could have allowed her arrest.
The request from of SPAK, was voted down after lawmakers from the ruling majority opposed the measure. In the parliamentary vote, 47 MPs voted in favor—mainly from the opposition—while 82 MPs from the governing majority voted against, effectively rejecting the prosecution’s request.
The majority argued in its report that the claims raised by SPAK no longer stand, noting that Balluku is no longer serving in a government executive role following her departure from the cabinet.
The vote also drew attention due to the absence of several lawmakers, including Elisa Spiropali, Fatmir Xhafaj, and minister Blendi Gonxhe, who were not present during the voting process.
Outside the Parliament building, opposition supporters held a protest that lasted less than two hours. Demonstrators dispersed after a brief speech by opposition leader Sali Berisha, head of the Democratic Party of Albania.
