Prosecutors Extend Probe Into Former Deputy PM Balluku
Special Prosecution against Corruption (SPAK) has extended its investigation into former Deputy Prime Minister and ex-Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Belinda Balluku by an additional three months, citing the need for further investigative actions.
According to sources familiar with the case, Special Prosecutor Dritan Prençi signed a more than 100-page decision on April 13, which has already been communicated to the defense lawyers of the accused. The decision argues that prosecutors require additional time to carry out what they describe as essential investigative steps.
SPAK said more time is needed in particular to secure testimonies from individuals with knowledge of the case, including former subordinates and close associates of Balluku.
Balluku was formally charged earlier with “violation of equality in public tenders” related to the construction of the Llogara Tunnel. She is also under investigation over procurement procedures linked to the Greater Ring Road project in Tirana.
Prosecutors allege that Balluku, in cooperation with subordinates, predetermined the winners of two major public tenders with a combined value of €210 million — €190 million for the Llogara Tunnel and €20 million for Lot 4 of the Greater Ring Road.
The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to gather evidence and testimonies.
