Rama Calls Closed-Door Meeting With Socialist MPs Amid Protests, Plans Tougher Laws on Violence

Prime Minister Edi Rama has convened a meeting of the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group on Monday, as protests continue to grip the country and the government prepares potential legal changes targeting violence at demonstrations.

The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the headquarters of the Albanian Parliament’s leadership in Tirana and will take place behind closed doors.

Discussions are expected to cover the parliamentary agenda and the upcoming plenary session, as well as legislative proposals announced by Rama concerning violent protests, penalties for participants involved in violence, and compensation for affected businesses.Rama is expected to present the proposed legal measures to Socialist lawmakers. The proposals could subsequently be submitted to Parliament through initiatives signed by members of the governing party, although it remains unclear whether the required signatures will be collected during Monday’s meeting.

The government is also expected to approve a normative act establishing compensation for businesses damaged during the unrest. Under the proposed scheme, small businesses would receive compensation covering 100% of eligible damages, while large businesses would receive 70%.

The compensation measure would then proceed to Parliament for consideration.
