Senior Police Officer Suspended Following Alleged Verbal Threats at Police Headquarters

Authorities have suspended former Shkodra Police Director Gentjan Berberi and launched a disciplinary investigation following an alleged incident at the headquarters of the State Police in Tirana.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the incident occurred on Thursday, only days after Berberi was removed from his position as head of the Shkodra Police Directorate. His dismissal was reportedly linked to what authorities described as insufficient performance in efforts to combat cannabis cultivation in northern Albania.

Following his reassignment to the Analysis Sector within the General Directorate of State Police, Berberi allegedly visited the office of the Human Resources Director to discuss his new role. Sources claim that during the meeting he used offensive language and exerted verbal pressure on the official, expressing dissatisfaction with his transfer and new assignment.

After the incident was reported, State Police Director General Skënder Hita ordered Berberi’s immediate suspension from duty. The Directorate of Professional Standards subsequently opened disciplinary proceedings to examine the allegations.

Meanwhile, the Human Resources Director has filed a criminal complaint with Albania’s Police Oversight Agency (AMP), alleging that she was insulted and threatened while carrying out her official duties.

The Police Oversight Agency has begun reviewing the case and is expected to determine whether any administrative or criminal violations occurred.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed additional details regarding the allegations, and Berberi has not issued a public response. The investigation remains ongoing as officials seek to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
