Socialist Lawmakers Push for Legal Changes After Fatal Crash in Durrës
Following a tragic accident in the coastal city of Durrës that claimed the lives of two minors and left a third seriously injured, Albanian lawmakers are moving toward proposing changes to both the Penal Code and the Road Code.
Ulsi Manja, head of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs and Public Administration, said during a committee discussion that he, along with several colleagues, will soon submit formal proposals to Parliament aimed at tightening legal measures.
“We will address Parliament with proposals for amendments to the Road Code and the Penal Code. Such events should not be the trigger for action, but we are reviewing all shortcomings to address them with the appropriate measures,” Manja said. He described the incident as extremely serious, adding that “the perpetrator of this criminal act does not deserve to live among us, but to be punished.”
The fatal crash reportedly involved a drunk driver who struck the victims, intensifying public concern over road safety and enforcement.
Meanwhile, opposition Democratic Party MP Arian Ndoja argued that the issue lies not in the absence of legislation but in its implementation.
“In my opinion, we already have the law, with penalties ranging from 5 to 20 years, but it is not enforced. These punishments are not seen in other European countries,” Ndoja stated. He also highlighted infrastructure concerns in residential areas, noting the lack of proper public spaces and road standards.
The incident has reignited debate in Albania over road safety, law enforcement, and the effectiveness of existing legal frameworks.
