Socialist MPs Seek Answers Over Erion Veliaj’s Transfer to Fier Prison
Two Socialist Party lawmakers have requested official clarification from Albania’s Ministry of Justice over the transfer of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj from the Durrës pre-trial detention facility to the prison institution in Fier.
According to a source within the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group, who spoke to Top Channel journalist Muhamed Veliu, the request was submitted to the Parliament’s Presidency on Thursday morning and subsequently forwarded to the Ministry of Justice.
The two lawmakers, Fatmir Xhafaj and Bledi Çuçi, who chair parliamentary committees, are seeking clarification on whether the General Directorate of Prisons formally notified the Ministry of Justice about the transfer order, which authorities have classified as a “state secret.”
They have also requested access to the documentary records related to the transfer procedure.
The development comes after the General Directorate of Prisons issued a statement on Thursday defending the transfer, saying it had been carried out in accordance with the legal framework and established procedures.
The directorate also stated that the transfer order was classified as a state secret and could not be disclosed outside the conditions permitted by law. It said the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) had been notified of the move.
The latest request by the two Socialist lawmakers raises further questions about the administrative process and the communication between prison authorities and the Ministry of Justice. The requested documents are expected to clarify whether the required notification procedures were followed.
