Veliaj’s Transfer to Fier Sparks Tensions Within Ruling Socialist Party

The transfer of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj to Fier has reportedly triggered tensions within the ruling Socialist Party, with a parliamentary group meeting bringing questions over the transfer documentation to the forefront.

According to information reported by Top Channel journalist Muhamed Veliu, Socialist Party MP Bledi Çuçi confronted Justice Minister Toni Gogu during a meeting of the party’s parliamentary group, demanding an explanation regarding the paperwork related to Veliaj’s transfer.

“Where is the transfer document? You should have obtained it before coming in. If you don’t have it, resign!” Çuçi reportedly told the minister during the meeting.

The controversy surrounding Veliaj has reignited debate over the procedures governing his transfer, the conditions of his isolation and the institutional responsibilities involved in the case.

The reported exchange also points to tensions between factions within the Socialist Party, as questions over the handling of Veliaj’s case continue to feature in internal party discussions.

So far, there has been no official confirmation that the Socialist Party, as an organization, has called for Gogu’s resignation. Meanwhile, Veliaj appears to be gaining support within the party’s parliamentary group, according to the information reported.

The developments come as scrutiny continues over the institutional decisions surrounding the Tirana mayor’s transfer and the political implications of the case.
