Special Court Sends Former Saranda Prosecutor to Trial on Corruption Charges

Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime has accepted a request from Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) to move forward with the trial of former Saranda prosecutor Kledian Llaho, attorney Çlirim Shahini, and businessmen Vasil Bakalli and Pando Papuçi.

All four are accused of corruption and exerting illegal influence over justice officials.

According to SPAK investigators, Llaho allegedly abused his position as a prosecutor to favor individuals under investigation in exchange for financial benefits.

The investigation found that a citizen identified by the initials M.A., who was being investigated by the Saranda Prosecution Office for alleged abuse of office, had outstanding financial obligations linked to an investment in a hotel involving Llaho’s father-in-law.

Prosecutors allege that Llaho requested the suspect repay approximately 1.8 million lekë to his father-in-law through businessman Vasil Bakalli, while allegedly promising to ease the suspect’s legal position in the ongoing investigation.

The case is now expected to proceed to full trial before Albania’s anti-corruption court.
