Speeding Suspected in Crash That Killed Three Young People in Albania
Excessive speed is suspected to have contributed to a crash in Durrës on Wednesday morning that killed three young people, as authorities continue to examine the circumstances of the deadly collision.
The crash has renewed concerns over speeding in Albania, where traffic authorities continue to record high numbers of violations despite tougher measures aimed at improving road safety.
Meanwhile, police nationwide suspended more than 1,500 driving licenses in a single week for speeding violations alone.
Road safety experts warn that excessive speed can become particularly deadly on roads with dangerous curves and insufficient signage.
“Speed does not give the driver enough time to maneuver. That road has dangerous curves. More signage is needed,” road safety expert Gëzim Hoxha said.
Albania introduced changes to several provisions of its Road Traffic Code about two weeks ago in an effort to prevent serious traffic violations. Among the measures is the possibility of lifetime license revocation for repeat offenders caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Using a mobile phone while driving can also result in a license suspension.
The revised rules also increase fines for dangerous maneuvers, with penalties reaching 60,000 Albanian lek.
But experts say stricter penalties alone will not solve the country’s road-safety problems.
“After every crash, there should be a thorough investigation: the vehicle, the road, the signage and the driver. Then regulations and government decisions should be drafted,” Hoxha said.
Despite repeated amendments to traffic laws and continued campaigns by Albania’s Road Police, the number of people killed in road crashes remains a persistent concern.
The investigation into Wednesday’s crash is expected to determine the exact circumstances, including whether excessive speed and road conditions contributed to the deaths.
