Tirana Police Chief Resigns Amid Leadership Shake-Up in Albania’s State Police

The director of Tirana Police, Elton Alushi, has resigned from his position, in a move widely seen as part of a broader restructuring initiated by Albania’s new State Police Director Skënder Hita.

Local media reported that Alushi submitted his resignation by mail, while a final decision on whether it will be accepted is still pending from Hita.

Alushi was appointed head of Tirana Police in November 2024 following a competition held under Albania’s new police law. He was considered one of the closest allies of former State Police Director Ilir Proda, who resigned at the beginning of March.

Since Hita took office, observers have noted a growing distance between the new police chief and officials closely associated with Proda, many of whom have gradually left their posts.

Chosen among several candidates during the 2024 selection process, Alushi’s appointment to lead the country’s most important police district had been viewed as a surprise within police ranks. His departure is now being interpreted as part of an ongoing reorganization within the upper leadership of the Albanian State Police.
