U.S. Diplomat Says American Investors Increasingly Eye Albania as Investment Destination

The United States’ Chargé d’Affaires in Albania, Nancy VanHorn, said American companies are paying increasing attention to investment opportunities in Albania, highlighting growing interest from U.S. businesses across key sectors of the economy.

Speaking at an event organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Tirana, VanHorn praised Albania’s newly established foreign investment screening framework, describing it as a strategic step toward balancing economic openness with the protection of national interests.

“American companies are already here—in energy, construction, and technology—and many more are looking to come,” VanHorn said. “Investors need confidence that the rules are clear, the playing field is level, and strategic sectors are protected from actors who do not play by the same rules.”

The senior U.S. diplomat emphasized that Albania’s foreign direct investment screening mechanism is more than a bureaucratic procedure, calling it a strategic signal that the country remains open to business while aligning with international standards for economic security.

VanHorn noted that the approach mirrors principles outlined in U.S. investment policy, which encourage foreign investment that supports economic growth while safeguarding critical infrastructure and strategic sectors.

She also stressed that adopting legislation is only the first step, adding that effective implementation will determine the framework’s success. The United States, she said, will continue supporting Albanian institutions throughout the process.

Addressing business leaders, VanHorn argued that transparent and predictable investment rules benefit both investors and the broader economy by attracting high-quality, long-term investment.

“Albania has taken an important step forward,” she said. “We welcome the work that lies ahead.”

The event brought together government officials, business representatives, and international partners to discuss the implementation of Albania’s foreign investment screening mechanism and its role in strengthening the country’s investment climate.
