Albanian Lawmakers Temporarily Blocked as Protesters Surround Parliament in High-Tension Standoff
A tense situation unfolded outside the Parliament of Albania in Tirana, where lawmakers were briefly blocked inside the parliamentary courtyard after protesters suddenly advanced from “Dëshmorët e Kombit” Boulevard toward Xhorxh Bush Street.
Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi was forced to urgently close the plenary session as demonstrators quickly gathered in the area in front of the parliament building.
Security forces, including the Republican Guard and State Police, immediately reinforced measures to prevent potential clashes, while protesters chanted slogans such as “your time is over” and “resign.”
Authorities confirmed that the episode ended without direct confrontation, as the Prime Minister and members of parliament left the area rapidly by car, taking alternative routes to avoid the crowd. Some ministers and MPs were seen passing near the protesters without incident, though demonstrators shouted insults including “thieves” as officials drove by.
Separately, a minor incident was reported near the headquarters of the Democratic Party of Albania, where party supporters allegedly provoked demonstrators. Protesters were chanting “Rama in prison, Berisha in prison” when tensions briefly escalated, though no physical clashes were reported.
Despite heightened tensions across the city center, the situation remained under control, with no injuries or major confrontations confirmed by authorities.
