Ethics Committee to Review Disciplinary Measures Against Seven Opposition MPs

The Parliamentary Ethics Committee is set to meet online today to review a request by the ruling Socialist Party to impose disciplinary sanctions on seven Democratic Party lawmakers following a tense parliamentary session marked by disruptions, a blocked podium and repeated interruptions.

According to the request submitted by Socialist lawmakers, Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha faces a 10-day suspension from Parliament.

Six other opposition MPs — Xhelal Mziu, Bledi Himçi, Ivi Kaso, Bledion Nallbati, Albana Vokshi and Klodiana Çapja — could face significantly tougher sanctions, with the Socialist Party seeking 60-day suspensions from parliamentary proceedings.

The disciplinary request follows yesterday’s parliamentary session, during which Democratic Party lawmakers blocked the speaker’s podium, set off flares and used whistles, disrupting the normal course of proceedings.

The tense scenes forced Parliament to suspend its session twice, as lawmakers were unable to continue with the scheduled agenda.
