PM to Meet Socialist Party Regional Leaders Amid Ongoing Protests
Prime Minister Edi Rama is set to convene a meeting with the Socialist Party’s regional political leaders on Wednesday morning at the party headquarters in Tirana.
The meeting comes just days after an expanded gathering of the ruling party’s parliamentary group and government officials held on June 20, where discussions focused on Albania’s European integration process and the ongoing protests related to the Zvërnec development project.
The latest meeting will take place as demonstrations in the capital continue for a fourth consecutive week. Protesters have been calling for Prime Minister Rama’s resignation, citing concerns over government policies and investment projects linked to the southern coastal area of Zvërnec.
Speaking at Saturday’s expanded meeting, Rama again addressed the protests and the controversy surrounding the project. He argued that international attention had been drawn not by the Narta area itself, but by the involvement of businessman Jared Kushner and his connection to former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Rama also linked the intensity of the public debate to the influence of digital platforms, saying that social media algorithms have created a new public square where accusations and labels can quickly gain traction and be perceived as established truths.
Responding to calls for his resignation, the prime minister reiterated his position, stating that he has no intention of stepping down.
The outcome of Wednesday’s meeting is expected to provide further insight into the Socialist Party’s strategy as protests continue and political tensions remain high.
