Simon Zereci Appointed Director General of Albania’s Republican Guard
Simon Zereci has been appointed Director General of Albania’s Republican Guard, according to an official announcement issued under the provisions of Law No. 33/2021 on the Republican Guard of Albania.
Zereci assumes the position after a period of leadership changes within the institution following the departure of former Director General Ermal Onuzi in June 2025. After Onuzi’s exit, Zereci initially served as acting head of the Guard, followed by Sami Kuti, before being formally appointed to the post.
In the official statement, authorities confirmed that Zereci will hold the rank of Major Director, one of the highest positions within the institution.
A career officer with decades of experience, Zereci has served as Commander of the Special Unit of the Republican Guard since 2013, a role considered among the most critical within Albania’s elite security structure.
During his military career, he has been recognized for his commitment and professionalism. In September 1998, Zereci was wounded while on duty while serving as Deputy Commander of the Operational Company.
He has also completed numerous security and protection training programs both in Albania and abroad. His qualifications include a VIP protection course in Egypt, specialized training in the protection of senior state officials conducted by American instructors, an international security program led by U.S. security experts, and advanced self-defense training in the Krav Maga Maor system, among other certifications.
The Republican Guard is responsible for the protection of Albania’s highest state institutions and senior officials, playing a key role in the country’s national security framework.
