Milot-Balldren Highway to Have Tunnel, Two Lanes

The Milot–Balldren Highway, one of the key segments of the Adriatic-Ionian Corridor in Albania, will be built on a completely new route and aims to solve traffic problems on one of the country's busiest roads.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, the project envisages the construction of a highway with a length of about 17 kilometers, designed according to the highest European standards of category A.

The new segment will be built on a new road corridor, while the existing Milot–Lezha–Balldren road will continue to function as an alternative route for local and regional traffic.

One of the most important engineering works of the project is the construction of a modern tunnel with two tubes, each 850 meters long. The tunnel will serve to bypass the city of Lezha and will enable faster and safer traffic circulation.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, the tunnel will be part of the new segment to be built between the Drini Bridge and Balldren, an area where there is currently no road infrastructure.

In addition to the tunnel, the project includes the construction of bridges, connecting nodes, service roads, intelligent traffic management and monitoring systems, as well as the necessary infrastructure for user charging.

The Milot–Balldren motorway is considered a strategic segment of the Adriatic-Ionian Corridor, which will better connect northern Albania with the regional transport network and European corridors.

The investment value is estimated at around Euro 365 million, and the project will be implemented through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The contract foresees a 35-year concession period, during which the concessionaire will be responsible for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the highway.
