Albania's ruling Socialist Party (PS) has requested disciplinary action against opposition lawmaker Agron Shehaj and has asked that the case be referred to the Special Prosecution Against Corruption (SPAK) following an incident at Parliament earlier today involving a confidential government document.

In a formal request submitted to Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi and the Secretariat for Procedures, Voting and Ethics, the Socialist Party called for Shehaj, leader of the Opportunity Party (Partia Mundësia), to be suspended from parliamentary committees and plenary sessions for 60 days.

According to the request, the incident occurred during the review of a direct loan agreement between Albania and the United States under the Foreign Military Financing programme. Lawmakers had reportedly been informed that the document contained classified information and could only be consulted within designated parliamentary premises after signing a confidentiality declaration.

The Socialist Party alleges that Shehaj entered the room where the document was being kept and attempted to remove a physical copy. After parliamentary staff refused his request, PS claims that the MP forcibly took the document and left the premises with it.

The request further alleges that a parliamentary adviser who attempted to recover the document fell down a flight of stairs during the incident and sustained injuries.

"The repeated violent and aggressive behaviour of MP Agron Shehaj placed the adviser at risk, leaving her defenceless in the face of unacceptable conduct," the Socialist Party said in its submission.

In addition to the requested disciplinary measures, the Socialist Party has asked that the case be referred to SPAK for criminal investigation. It argues that Shehaj's alleged actions may constitute offences related to the unlawful acquisition of classified information, misappropriation of official documents, obstruction of a public official in the performance of their duties, and violations of laws protecting state secrets.

Shehaj has not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of publication.
