UN Raises Alarm Over Escalating Violence During Four Days of Protests in Tirana

The United Nations in Albania has expressed concern over acts of violence and escalating tensions during four consecutive days of protests in the capital, calling on all parties to exercise restraint and engage in constructive dialogue.

In a statement, the UN emphasized the importance of protecting fundamental rights, including peaceful assembly, freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

The organization also stressed that the safety and dignity of all individuals must be safeguarded in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter and international human rights standards.

The UN highlighted the need for law enforcement authorities to exercise restraint and proportionality, while ensuring due process and protecting both public and private property.

“We call on all parties involved to refrain from violence, contribute to de-escalating tensions and engage in constructive dialogue, in a spirit of mutual respect and shared commitment to peace and the rule of law,” the statement said.

The intervention comes amid continuing student-led protests in Tirana, where clashes between demonstrators and police have raised concerns over public safety and the protection of civil liberties.

The UN did not endorse any political side, focusing instead on human rights, restraint and dialogue as essential steps toward easing tensions.
